Murray MacPherson joined the Stawell Athletic Club as a young man and in 1975 joined Alistair Cox and Vern Chapman on the starting panel of the Gift. He has worked for the club ever since and is the starter for the race each year. He has witnessed first hand the highs and lows, and has an innate knowledge of the history and stories behind the sporting club and its members. He is also a cricket writer and in 2007 released Greatest Ashes Players through Brolga.
