The Production of Grapes & Wine in Cool Climates

Author(s): David Jackson & Danny Schuster

Miscellaneous

Reprint, previously published 1998. The aim of this book is to provide a background and guide to the production of grapes and wines especially in the cooler regions. Its scope is considerable, covering the geographical description and growing of grapes, the making of wine and its subsequent evaluation - with clear text and diagrams concerning site and variety selection, planting, establishment, pruning and training, pests and diseases, climate requirements, soil management, etc. In concentrating on cooler climates it acknowledges the increasing interest in growing grapes and wine in the cooler parts of Australia and the South Island of New Zealand. Dr David Jackson is a retired fruit scientist specialising in grapes, particularly the production of wine and grapes in cooler climates. He has worked with the DSIR and Lincoln University where he was eventually a Professorial Fellow, and his research was instrumental in directing the commercial establishment of viticulture in Canterbury New Zealand and locations further south. He has received awards for excellence for his contribution to the grape/wine industry.
